Denzel Washington makes rare red carpet appearance with family at TIFF
Denzel Washington made a rare red carpet appearance with nearly his entire immediate family at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The 69-year-old actor was joined by his wife, Pauletta, 73, their sons, John David, 40, and Malcolm, 33, and their daughter, Katia, 37, for the premiere of The Piano Lesson, Malcolm’s directorial debut, which also stars John David in a major role.
The film is based on the 1987 play by August Wilson, with Denzel serving as a producer. Washington has a long history of working with Wilson’s material, having previously starred in and produced adaptations of his works.
Malcolm’s twin sister, Olivia, was the only immediate family member absent from the red carpet.
The Piano Lesson tells the story of a Black family in Pittsburgh during the waning days of the Great Depression. A conflict erupts over a piano carved with images by the family patriarch’s grandfather, a former slave. Samuel L. Jackson portrays the father in the film, with John David as his son and Till actress Danielle Deadwyler as the daughter. The daughter wants to keep the piano for its sentimental value, while the son seeks to sell it to buy the farmland where their ancestors were once enslaved.
Denzel and Pauletta, who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last year, looked as radiant as ever. Pauletta stunned in a powder pink trouser suit, accented with strings of pearls, adding a glamorous touch. Denzel, known for his signature smile, appeared in a stylish black suit paired with a matching t-shirt.
John David, a former professional football player, showcased his athletic physique in a sleek black suit that highlighted his toned arms. He paired it with a white t-shirt and accessorized with a fashion-forward belt fastened around his midsection, worn over his jacket.
Malcolm opted for a trendsetting oversized charcoal suit, complemented by a white t-shirt and black leather shoes, embodying a relaxed yet stylish look.
Danielle Deadwyler made a statement in a sheer silver dress with metallic embroidery around the neckline and shoulders. The sleeveless gown, cinched at the waist, highlighted her svelte figure and exuded elegance.
The star-studded family posed for a group photo alongside The Piano Lesson cast member Corey Hawkins, who sported a loose-fitted grey suit with a white dress shirt, blending classic and contemporary styles.
