DHQ mourns ex-Army spokesman Rabe Abubakar, vows stronger anti-terror operations

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by unknown assailants.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, expressed the condolences of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to the family of the late officer, his colleagues, and Nigerians at large.

According to the military, the late Maj. Gen. Abubakar served Nigeria with distinction throughout his career, holding several strategic appointments, including spokesperson roles for various military formations and Director of Defence Information, where he served as spokesman for the Armed Forces.

The Defence Headquarters described him as a dedicated officer who made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, military professionalism, and national security.

The military disclosed that it had refrained from publicly commenting on his abduction while rescue efforts were ongoing, noting that all available operational resources were deployed in an attempt to secure his release.

DHQ said the tragic loss has further strengthened the resolve of the Armed Forces to combat terrorism and insecurity across the country.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will remain steadfast in the discharge of its constitutional responsibility to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and protect all citizens,” the statement said.

The military added that ongoing security operations have been intensified in response to recent cases of abduction, including that of the late retired general, with efforts focused on apprehending those responsible and dismantling terrorist and criminal networks.
