Edo, NIPCO Gas explore CNG partnership to cut transport costs

The Edo State Government is exploring a partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited to expand Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure and reduce transportation costs for residents.
The Commissioner for Oil and Gas Resources, Hon. Andrew Momodu, disclosed this during an engagement with officials of NIPCO Gas, saying the initiative was part of efforts to provide more affordable transportation options amid rising fuel costs.
Momodu said the State’s investment in CNG-powered buses had created the need for supporting gas infrastructure to make the alternative fuel more accessible and encourage wider adoption across the transportation sector.
He said collaboration with NIPCO Gas would enable Edo to develop practical gas-based transportation solutions while advancing its broader gas utilisation objectives.
The Chief Operating Officer of NIPCO Gas Limited, Mr. Sanjay Tarat, expressed the company’s readiness to explore areas of partnership with the State Government, particularly in expanding CNG facilities and promoting the use of natural gas in transportation.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Joy Akhigbe, said the government would sustain discussions with NIPCO Gas to identify viable investment opportunities that could strengthen the State’s oil and gas sector and improve residents’ welfare.
The engagement is part of Edo’s efforts to develop the infrastructure required to support greater adoption of CNG as an alternative transportation fuel.
