Ekiti 2026: APC describes Afuye WAEC controversy as political smear

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected allegations surrounding the WAEC certificate of the Deputy Governor and APC deputy governorship candidate, Mrs Monisade Afuye, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.
The controversy followed the publication of candidates’ particulars by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which indicated that Afuye sat for the WAEC examination in June 1978 at Amoye Grammar School, Ikere-Ekiti, with credits and passes recorded in relevant subjects.
Reacting, the APC publicity secretary in the state, Segun Dipe, said the issue was being exaggerated by opposition parties in a bid to gain relevance ahead of the June 20 governorship election.
He insisted that Afuye met all constitutional requirements, adding that her academic credentials were properly screened and cleared by the party and relevant authorities before her nomination.
Dipe accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) of attempting to undermine public confidence in the ruling party, stressing that the APC would not be distracted by what he described as smear campaigns.
However, the development has continued to attract criticism from the opposition, with the South-West PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, describing the situation as embarrassing for a state known for academic excellence.
“This is a source of embarrassment for all Ekiti people. A state widely celebrated for academic excellence and intellectual prowess deserves better,” Atofarati said.
Similarly, the ADC publicity secretary in Ekiti State, Gboyega Aribisogan, faulted the O’Level result submitted by the deputy governor, saying unresolved doubts about its authenticity could trigger fresh legal battles as the election approaches.
