Ex-Ooni’s wife Zaynab speaks on marriage to SGF George Akume

Former wife and queen to the Ooni of Ife, Zaynab Ngohemba, formerly known as Zaynab Otiti Obanor, has opened up about her recent marriage to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The couple reportedly exchanged vows in a private ceremony in 2024, an event that has since drawn widespread attention across Nigeria’s social and political circles.
In a statement released on Wednesday through her media aide, David Adeoye, and published by ThisDay, Zaynab described the marriage as a partnership “rooted in maturity, shared purpose, and mutual understanding.”
She emphasised that the union reflects the coming together of two individuals already committed to public service, rather than a change in personal direction.
Adeoye noted that the marriage comes at a time when Nigerians increasingly demand integrity and compassion from public office holders, adding that the couple exemplifies these qualities.
“At a time when Nigerians demand integrity and humanity from those in leadership, this union sends a subtle yet powerful message that service is strongest when anchored in personal stability, shared values, and a long-term vision,” the statement read.
Zaynab, who was married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, from March 2016 until 2017, explained that her current marriage to Akume represents a leadership model grounded in empathy, stability, and shared values.
She highlighted that personal harmony, she believes, strengthens public service and reinforces the ideals of integrity, discipline, and commitment.
