EXPLAINER: Implication of the repealed Kano Emirate Council Law
The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday, in a unanimous vote, repealed the Emirate Council Law of 2019 and the 2023 amended version.
The assembly proclaimed that the Kano traditional council’s division into five emirates would now be reversed to one emirate going forward.
With the repeal of the Emirate Council Law, the Emir of Kano and the four new emirs installed by former Governor Abdullah Umar Ganduje have been dethroned.
The new statute grants Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf the exclusive right to appoint the Emir of Kano.
Insinuations are rife that Governor Yusuf could reappoint the 15th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi.
