IGP deploys DIGs across geopolitical zones, directs joint state patrols

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to their respective geopolitical zones as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and improve security coordination across Nigeria.

The deployment, which takes effect from Monday, 15 June, was announced on Wednesday during the monthly conference with senior strategic officers of the Nigeria Police Force held at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the Force, the move is aimed at bringing strategic leadership closer to operational theatres, improving supervision, and ensuring quicker responses to emerging security threats nationwide.

The DIGs are expected to work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police within their zones to enhance coordination and ensure effective implementation of policing directives.

In addition, the IGP directed all Commissioners of Police to immediately establish coordinated inter-state security operations tagged “Handshake Patrols” with neighbouring state commands.

The initiative is designed to strengthen intelligence sharing, improve communication between commands, and enable joint responses to crimes that cross state boundaries.

Explaining the rationale behind the reforms, the IGP said: “The deployment is aimed at bringing strategic leadership closer to the field, strengthening accountability, and ensuring prompt response to emerging security threats.”

He further noted that criminal elements often exploit jurisdictional gaps between states.

“Criminals often exploit jurisdictional gaps by committing offences in one state and escaping into another,” he said.
