The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a Tax Ombudsman—an independent institution tasked with safeguarding vulnerable taxpayers and ensuring that Nigeria’s tax system operates fairly for everyone, especially small businesses.
President Bola Tinubu made this known in a statement on Thursday to mark the second anniversary of his administration.
He explained that the initiative aims to promote fairness and accountability in tax administration.
“To promote fairness and accountability, we are establishing a Tax Ombudsman—an independent institution that will protect vulnerable taxpayers and ensure the system works for everyone, especially small businesses,” the President said.
The Tax Ombudsman will serve as a watchdog and advocate for taxpayers, addressing grievances, enhancing transparency, and making it easier for small enterprises to comply with tax regulations without undue burden.
In addition, President Tinubu announced the launch of a new national fiscal policy framework aimed at guiding fair taxation, responsible borrowing, and disciplined public spending.
“This strategic framework will lay the foundation for a more sustainable future,” he said. “These reforms are designed to reduce the cost of living, promote economic justice, and build a business-friendly economy that attracts investment and supports every Nigerian.”
The President also highlighted progress in diversifying the economy, particularly in the solid minerals sector. According to him, the sector has witnessed significant revenue growth as it transitions from the outdated pit-to-port policy to a value-added approach, attracting new investors and processing plants.
