Igbasan urges new nurses to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system amid brain drain
The Vice-Chancellor of McPherson University, Prof. Francis Adegbaye Igbasan, has urged newly inducted nursing graduates to help strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system despite the growing migration of health professionals abroad.
Igbasan gave the charge on Friday during the university’s third Nursing Induction Ceremony, where 52 Nursing Science graduates were formally inducted into the profession after completing five years of academic and clinical training.
Igbasan described nursing as a sacred calling that demands compassion, integrity, excellence and selfless service, urging the graduates to remain committed to serving humanity throughout their careers.
He also expressed concern over the continued migration of Nigerian nurses and other healthcare professionals to foreign countries, encouraging the inductees to contribute meaningfully to improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
Delivering the induction lecture on behalf of the guest speaker, Prof. Prisca Adejumo, Dr. (Mrs.) Ojo Iyanuoluwa said compassionate care remains the foundation of quality nursing practice and urged the graduates to uphold professionalism, accountability and ethical standards in their work.
Meanwhile, the Registrar and Secretary-General of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Alhassan Ndagi, represented by Dr. (Mrs.) Modupe Ayoola, administered the professional oath and charged the inductees to be worthy ambassadors of the nursing profession.
Earlier, the Coordinating Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Dr. Dorcas Shonibare, presented the 52 graduates to the council for induction, while the Provost of the College of Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Lucy Airauhi, encouraged them to embrace lifelong learning and maintain the highest standards of professional practice.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, valedictorian and best graduating student Nurse Abiodun Ayooluwa Deborah thanked the university, lecturers and parents for their support and urged her colleagues to uphold integrity, excellence and compassionate service as they begin their professional careers.
