LG crisis: PDP council chairmen resume duties in Osun

Chairmen elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 22, 2025 local government election on Friday resumed duties at several council secretariats across Osun State.

It would be recalled that the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo had on June 15 dismissed a suit filed by chairmen elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ruling that their tenure expired in October 2025.

Among the council chairmen who resumed at their respective councils were those of Ede South, Ede North, Iwo, Ila-Orangun and Ifedayo local governments, among others.

Videos circulated on Facebook and other social media platforms showed the chairman of Iwo Local Government, Hon. Kabir Moshood, alongside other local government officials at the council secretariat, while another video showed Hon. Nasir Jayeola Adebisi resuming duties at the Ila-Orangun Local Government Secretariat.

Speaking at the secretariat, Adebisi thanked residents for their support and assured them that the party would not disappoint them.

At the Ede North and Ede South Local Government Secretariats, supporters were seen chanting “Imole, Imole” as the officials resumed duties.

Addressing party supporters, the chairman of Ede North Local Government, Hon. Shina Sepenteri, urged them to remain law-abiding, assuring security personnel that necessary steps would be taken to ensure the smooth running of the council. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the council leadership to peace, legality and effective service delivery.

Otunba Sarafadeen Abiodun Awotunde, the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, and chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, described the return of the elected chairmen and councillors as the restoration of local government administration elected by the people of the state.
