NDC insists on party supremacy, reads riot act to members on political appointments

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has restated its commitment to party supremacy, insisting that all political appointments and governance decisions under its platform must be made in consultation with party structures.

This was contained in a statement by the Office of the National Publicity Secretary following resolutions of the party’s Second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting aimed at strengthening internal discipline and institutional control.

The party stressed that its authority remains central to all elected officials, declaring: “The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.”

It added that all government programs, policies, and appointments—except personal staff—must be coordinated with the party hierarchy.

The NDC also directed that all affiliated groups and NGOs operate strictly under party guidance, warning against independent structures acting outside official control.

According to the statement, “All affiliated groups and NGOs shall operate under the guidance and control of the party and must not function in parallel with, or independently of, the party structure.”

As part of reforms, the party announced plans to introduce a comprehensive Code of Conduct for officials and candidates, with a committee led by the National Legal Adviser tasked to develop guidelines.

It also inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee to resolve internal grievances and promote unity among members.

Reaffirming its long-term vision, the party said it is not built around individuals, stating: “The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded.”
