Nigeria records increased agricultural output, lower food prices — Kyari
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security says the nation has reported significant achievements in improving food security, boosting agricultural productivity, and supporting farmers across Nigeria under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement forum on Agricultural and Food Systems Transformation, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari highlighted key milestones recorded by the ministry.
According to the minister, prices of major food staples have declined by as much as 50 percent in several parts of the country. He noted that the ministry provided strategic support across major agricultural value chains, including rice, maize, wheat, millet, sorghum, cassava, cocoa, soybeans, cotton, and oil palm.
Kyari disclosed that more than 1.9 million bags of fertilizer were distributed to nearly one million farmers nationwide, alongside improved seeds, agrochemicals, safety kits, and pest management support. He added that a 2025 survey conducted by the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services confirmed increased production of major crops compared to 2024.
To strengthen quality control in the agricultural sector, the ministry established a National Reference Laboratory and upgraded the National Fertilizer Management Platform to tackle the circulation of counterfeit fertilizers. More than 3,500 farmers were also trained in sustainable soil management practices.
The minister said rural infrastructure projects delivered approximately 170 kilometres of asphalt roads, 57 kilometres of earth roads, 296 boreholes, 3,596 solar-powered street lights, and 69 rural housing and market facilities.
Under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Programme, 2,000 tractors and other agricultural equipment were deployed nationwide to improve farm productivity. The ministry also facilitated the establishment of 10 large-scale integrated processing plants and seven composite flour milling factories.
As part of efforts to promote innovation and agribusiness development, two Agribusiness Incubation Centres were established at Federal University Lokoja and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
