NSGF pledges continued support for FG to tackle food insecurity

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, has assured Nigerians that state governments will continue to work closely with the federal government to address the ongoing food insecurity crisis in the country.
Speaking to State House correspondents after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor Yahaya emphasized the importance of this collaboration in ensuring that citizens have access to adequate food supplies.
Governor Yahaya pointed out that insecurity in certain regions has significantly contributed to food shortages, as many farmers have been unable to cultivate their lands due to ongoing violence and threats.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the northern governors to support federal initiatives aimed at restoring security and boosting agricultural production across the country.
“With regards to the issue of hunger, I attribute it to the vulnerability and the incidence of insecurity that have prevented people from going to their farms, especially in the major agricultural areas of the states. As a result, food supply issues have arisen.
“I believe that all the states, in conjunction with the federal government—especially with the support provided by Mr. President—are making efforts to address these issues. Recently, food prices have started to drop, and that decrease, along with the palliatives provided by both federal and state governments, will help stabilize the situation. It will continue to improve by the grace of God,” he said.
On the issue of flooding, the NSGF Chairman stated that his administration has taken proactive measures to prevent such incidents.
“There hasn’t been any flooding in Gombe so far, but we are being proactive by desilting major channels, especially in Gombe Township and in the local governments, with the support of the North-East Development Commission. This has ensured a smooth flow of rainwater this year.
“While we are not anticipating floods, we are prepared for any eventuality, as we have received support and are ready to address the issue,” Governor Yahaya stated.
Regarding the recent emergence of the M-pox disease, the Governor confirmed that there have been no reported cases in Gombe. However, he assured that the state is prepared for any potential cases and commended the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for their proactive measures.
“The NCDC, in conjunction with state health agencies, is doing its best, especially after the experience of COVID-19. I believe the states are prepared to address any issues, and the NCDC is playing a key role in this effort.
“In Gombe State, we have four diagnostic centres and laboratories that are ready to analyze and respond if the disease appears. I believe many states are similarly prepared, and Nigeria may find it easier to manage this time around,” he assured.
The Governor also revealed that the Gombe State government has a standing committee tasked with implementing the new national minimum wage for workers.
He said, “Most states have set up committees; in Gombe, we have a standing committee headed by the Deputy Governor. They are working with the labor unions to ensure that we do the right thing. While the new minimum wage is law, its implementation requires consequential adjustments, and each state must follow the process properly to ensure we get it right.”
