June 12: Obasa reaffirms faith in democracy, Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has reaffirmed his confidence in Nigeria’s democratic journey and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while calling for calm and reconciliation within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the nation marks Democracy Day.

In a Democracy Day statement signed by his Special Adviser on Research, Media and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo, Obasa described June 12 as an epochal date in Nigeria’s history, symbolising the resilience of the Nigerian people and their unwavering commitment to democratic governance and popular sovereignty.

“I extend warm congratulations to fellow citizens at home and in the diaspora, and to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Every June 12 serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in defending freedom, justice and democratic values,” he said.

The Speaker said the annual commemoration honours the sacrifices of pro-democracy advocates who fought for the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country, adding “Twenty-seven years into the Fourth Republic, we reaffirm our unshakeable faith in democratic governance as the surest path to national development and individual prosperity”.

Obasa noted that President Tinubu’s personal sacrifices and longstanding role in the struggle for democracy continue to shape his bold leadership and reform agenda.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, our nation is making steady progress toward economic renewal, improved governance and greater national unity. It is therefore incumbent on all Nigerians to support this vision, through which the President is building a stronger economy where enterprise can thrive, opportunities are expanded and the dividends of democracy reach every part of the country,” he added.

The Speaker also appealed to APC members, particularly in Lagos State, to embrace reconciliation following the party’s recent primaries, which sparked protests in some areas over allegations of candidate imposition and other irregularities.

“Party primaries are contests, not wars. We must prioritise internal cohesion, dialogue and mutual respect. Let us resolve our differences through democratic means, strengthen our party structures and remain focused on delivering good governance to Nigerians. A united APC will not only consolidate democratic gains but also position the party to continue driving national progress and stability.”
