Stallions face ruby giants South Africa in 7 showdown

Nigeria’s Rugby Sevens team, the Stallions, will face African and global rugby powerhouse South Africa in one of the marquee fixtures of the 2026 Rugby Africa Sevens Championship scheduled for June 20 and 21 in Cascavelle, Mauritius.
While diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa have continued to attract attention over recurring xenophobia concerns, the focus in Mauritius will be firmly on rugby as the Stallions take on the renowned Blitzboks in a highly anticipated Pool A encounter. Drawn alongside South Africa, hosts Mauritius and Zambia’s Nkwazi, Nigeria face a challenging path to the knockout stages.
The Stallions will be eager to test their growing credentials against one of the most successful and respected sevens rugby nations in the world.For Nigeria, the clash against the Blitzboks represents more than a battle for group-stage points.
It offers an opportunity to measure their progress against a global rugby giant and demonstrate their readiness to compete among Africa’s elite teams.Elsewhere, Pool B comprises Ghana’s Eagles, Tunisia, Madagascar and Senegal. Senegal were drafted in as replacements for Uganda following the latter’s withdrawal amid concerns over an Ebola outbreak.
Reports indicated that some members of the Ugandan delegation had tested positive for the virus, although no players were affected.Pool C is also expected to deliver intense competition, with Zimbabwe, Kenya, Morocco and Madagascar set to battle for supremacy in a group packed with quality and experience.Nigeria arrive in Mauritius determined to improve on their seventh-place finish at the previous edition of the tournament.
The Stallions reached the quarter-finals before losing to Kenya and concluded their campaign with two victories and four defeats.With a fresh challenge ahead and a heavyweight showdown against South Africa on the horizon, the Stallions have another opportunity to show that Nigerian rugby is steadily advancing toward the continent’s top tier.
