Obasanjo’s second attempt to ‘enthrone’ Obi as president, says Kola Amzat

On Saturday, April 04, 2026 at the commissioning of Gateway International Cargo Airport, Iperu, Ogun state, ex-president-Olusegun Obasanjo joined other Ogun leaders to welcome Nigerian president-Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at the Airport for the commissioning of the gigantic project.

The ex-president, decked in overflowing Agbada Tinubu themed attire made of local Adire fabrics, a development that sent tongues wagging for several weeks on social media platforms.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries, with the ex-president welcoming the president on behalf of all Ogun state citizenry and profoundly thanked him for making the sacrifice to honour the invitation to inaugurate the airport.

For the record, the visit was the fourth time the two leaders met since the president’s inauguration in 2023, having met in Jan 2024 in Owerri during the inauguration of Hope Uzodinma for second term in office, and in June 2024 in S/A during the inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa as president, as well as during the Jan 2025 inauguration of president of Ghana-John Mahama of Ghana at Black Star Square.

However, the Iperu Airport commissioning meeting was indeed striking particularly with the exchange of kind words by the two leaders, as generality of Nigerians and public analysts termed it the beginning of the long-awaited re-approachment. 

But, few discerning minds and wise men including the writer advise the president of the need to be cautious and that, it’s not yet Uhuru, especially against the backdrop of well documented political trajectory of the rtd general that is characterized with deceit, deception and chicanery.

Recent public declaration by a former political advisor of the Owu high chief, Akin Osuntokun that Obi/Kwakwanso ticket was a personal project of the ex-president, as he singlehandedly brokered the ticket between the duo has vindicated those of us who fervently believe that the deceptive posture of the rtd general at Iperu Airport commissioning should be taken with pinch of salt.

Osuntokun was very emphatic that it was the former president who ensured the ticket. The ex-advisor affirmed that during a recent meeting of the trio, Obasanjo was audacious in his remarks to Kwakwanso –“If you had agreed the other time, both of you would have spent one term, and Kwakwanso would have been the beneficiary of that”   

What other signals do Yorubas and all well-meaning Nigerians await to acknowledge that Owu high chief is not with the Yorubas and has never been?

He continually deploys his arsenal against the race that gives him everything in life. Yes, everything, including his much vaunted international recognition!

He blacklisted and made several vicious attempts to humiliate ex-president-Goodluck Jonathan until Jonathan’s tenure came to a close.

The sanctimonious Baba Iyabo resolve to continue the sporadic attacks on the deceased ex-president Muhammud Buhari was tactically brushed aside as the Daura born rtd general totally kept Obasanjo at bay throughout his eight years tenure.

In the last three years, the relationship between him and President Tinubu has been like cat and mouse. Of course, the president- a visionary, very tactful and indeed imbued with unusual wisdom and discerning heart has strategically fenced and barricaded him, affording him no opportunity to interlope in his government.

Obasanjo tirades and frantic efforts at riding roughshod on the present administration in its earlier days were met with brick wall, as the president’s very informed, contemporary, witty, resourceful and vibrant media team always engage him with equal measures with unassailable facts, statistics and data to counter his mischief.

This is why the ex-president has maintained a dignified silence on issues concerning the Tinubu government.

There exists no doubt that Chief Obasanjo is sufficiently frustrated and demeaned consequent upon being ostracized and completely deprived of opportunity to be flaunting himself across the country.

Nigerians could easily count the number of times he’s attended the Council of State meetings since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu! He has never been there, maintaining the type of posture and attitude displayed against the Muhammud Buhari regime!

Happily, this administration has never bothered whether he attends or not as the wheel of government continues to move and cruise without him.

This is enough to traumatize a leader who harbours erroneous belief that Nigeria is ONLY about him and nothing tangible would happen if he’s not there.

Meanwhile, the centerpiece of this Piece: the rtd general and his protégé-Peter Obi failed woefully during the 2023 presidential elections despite their campaign of calumny, subterfuge, propaganda, falsehood, and concocted lies against Asiwaju Tinubu, as well as their electioneering campaign rooted in hate, jealousy, religious and ethnic sentiments.

Crushing defeat awaits them during the forthcoming polls. The defeat that would ultimately nail Peter Obi’s political coffin! The defeat that would significantly diminish the much vaunted larger than life image of the ex-president! The defeat that would keep both of them in perpetual mute forever!

This writer is of deep conviction that Peter Obi would never be president of this wonderfully endowed country and I anchor my conviction on the followings:

Indeed, he constitutes serious danger to the present and future generations, as well the territorial integrity of the country by his continual disposition to ethnicity and religious sentiments.  

Secondly, his eight years regime as Anambra state helmsman was never salutary, as he couldn’t point in clear terms to a single milestone and accomplishment while in charge. How could such a non-performer aspire to the nation’s topmost office? 

Of course, Peter Obi as presidential candidate of Labour Party and even now as the flag bearer of NDC have never developed and presented any salutary, robust, developmental and problem-solving blueprint capable of resolving diverse challenges the country is grappling with.

His notoriety is to continually present falsehood, concocted lies, unsubstantiated data and statistics copy & paste from other countries that would never address Nigerian problems.

Peter Obi has never inspired anybody except his virulent, very disruptive and unpatriotic obedient movement members who obviously have been hypnotized over the years.

Finally, this writer and generality of Nigerians couldn’t wait for the political godfather and protégé to go into the forthcoming election and be totally eclipsed.
