Olaopa hails Aláàfin Ọ̀yọ́’s coronation as catalyst for Yoruba renaissance

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has described the coronation of the 46th Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́, Ọba Abímbọlá Akeem Ọ̀wọ́adé, as a historic moment marking a significant step in the Yoruba renaissance.

In a congratulatory message ahead of the monarch’s coronation scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, Prof. Olaopa said the ascension of Ọba Ọ̀wọ́adé carries deep cultural, political, and social symbolism, resonating across Yorùbáland and the global Yoruba diaspora.

“The coronation of a new Aláàfin is always a momentous event. It is not just about succession but about cultural rebirth and continuity,” Olaopa stated. “His Imperial Majesty, Ọba Abímbọlá Akeem Ọ̀wọ́adé, is stepping into big shoes—not only as the successor of great monarchs like Aláàfin Atìbà Atọ́batẹ́lẹ̀ and the iconic Lamidi Adéyẹmí, but as the inheritor of a rich tradition dating back to heroic figures such as Ọ̀rànmíyàn and Ṣàngó.”

Olaopa stressed that the new Aláàfin must play a crucial role in fostering a Yoruba renaissance grounded in culture, civilization, and inclusive development. He noted that Yoruba heritage reflects a long history of city-building, cultural dynamism, political resilience, and entrepreneurial prowess—foundations that must be revitalized under the monarch’s reign.

He emphasized the unique place of the Aláàfin as a “traditional agent of modernization” who must balance orthodoxy with innovation. According to him, “Yoruba renaissance must start at the level where the Aláàfin serves as the rallying point for southwest socioeconomic development, beginning with Afijio and Òkè-Ògùn, and extending throughout the region.”

Olaopa also urged the monarch to lead with a spirit of unity, calling for a break from past rivalries between major Yoruba royal institutions. He emphasized the importance of the Aláàfin and Ọọ̀ni of Ifẹ̀ working together to harness cultural and political resources for the collective progress of Yorùbáland.

“His reign must reflect a cosmopolitan outlook that brings creative and cultural innovation into Nigeria’s democratic journey. I see this coronation as a new beginning not only for Ọ̀yọ́ but for the entire southwest,” he added.

He concluded by praying for a long, peaceful, and fruitful reign for the new monarch, Ọba Ọ̀wọ́adé.
