Oyo APC probes reported deaths of over 200 Amotekun operatives

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has called on the state government to clarify reports suggesting that more than 200 personnel of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps, have died under unclear circumstances.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the party described the development as alarming and said the figures referenced by Governor Seyi Makinde require urgent explanation, especially given their implications for security in the state.

The APC said the governor’s earlier remarks on the matter lacked sufficient details, urging the government to disclose the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths and steps being taken to safeguard operatives.

The controversy stems from comments allegedly made by Makinde during a visit to Oriire Local Government Area on May 30, where he referenced the deaths of over 200 Amotekun personnel in active service.

The opposition party criticised the disclosure, saying it raised concerns about accountability, operational safety and coordination within the state’s security framework.

It also questioned the effectiveness of collaboration between Amotekun and federal security agencies in tackling rising insecurity.

The APC further urged the government to improve welfare, training and equipment for operatives, warning that inadequate conditions and improper deployment could expose personnel to avoidable risks.

Amotekun, established by South-West states as a regional security outfit to support federal agencies, has faced increasing scrutiny amid worsening insecurity across parts of the region.
