PHOTO NEWS: Bisi Fayemi demands greater role for women at AMwA 40th anniversary in Kampala

Wife of former Ekiti State Governor and women’s advocate, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, has joined leading voices of women in Africa in demanding a greater role for women in leadership positions.

Erelu Fayemi spoke during a fireside chat at the 40th anniversary of Akina Mama wa Afrika in Kampala, Uganda.

The former Ekiti First Lady wrote on her social media timelines:

“Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), an international development organisation for African women, recently marked its 40th anniversary in Kampala, Uganda. I served as the Director of AMwA for ten years (1991–2001) when the organisation was still based in London.

“While I was at AMwA, I helped set up the African Women’s Leadership Institute in 1997, a training, capacity-building and networking forum that has produced over 10,000 women leaders across the continent. AMwA brought together previous executive directors, staff and board members of the organisation for the celebration, and it was an unbelievable feeling to be on a platform with all my former colleagues at AMwA.

“I participated in a fireside chat with my ED successors: Thoko Matse (Zimbabwe), Zeedah Meihofer-Mangeli (Kenya), Solome Nakaweesi (Uganda) and Leah Chipepa (Zambia). The chat was moderated by Sarah Mukasa (Uganda), former President of AMwA. It was also great to see sisters such as Hilda Tadria, Gloria Ogunbadejo, Iheoma Obibi, Florence Butegwa and many others.

“The organisation continues to be a powerful voice in the African women’s movement, a testimony to the fact that African civil society has produced outstanding leaders across all sectors.

“Congratulations and many thanks to the current ED of AMwA, Eunice Musiime, and her colleagues for pulling off such a magnificent reunion.”
