Shettima begins first leave since taking office, to focus on study, policy review
Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave, his first since assuming office in May 2023, following the approval of President Bola Tinubu.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha, said the leave, which began on August 6, would allow the Vice President to devote time to study, reflection and intellectual renewal.
According to the statement, the period will be used to strengthen Shettima’s capacity for national service through a review of the Tinubu administration’s ongoing programmes, deeper engagement with emerging national and global policy issues, and preparation for the next phase of implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The statement noted that since taking office on May 29, 2023, Shettima has played a key role in coordinating and supervising strategic government initiatives spanning economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
It added that the Vice President has chaired meetings of the National Economic Council (NEC), which comprises the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior public officials, to deliberate on policies affecting the economy and citizens’ welfare.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, Shettima has represented President Tinubu at several regional and international engagements, promoting Nigeria’s interests on economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.
The statement said the Vice President remains committed to supporting President Tinubu’s administration and will resume official duties at the end of the two-week leave with “renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation.”
