Tinubu hails Jonathan’s ‘covenant of service’ at foundation’s 10th anniversary

President Bola Tinubu has lauded former President Goodluck Jonathan for his enduring commitment to democracy and national stability, noting that Nigeria’s democratic institutions continue to thrive because of leaders who place the country above personal ambition.
Tinubu delivered the commendation on Thursday at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, he said Jonathan’s actions in office and his conduct afterward remain a model of selfless leadership.
He described Jonathan as a statesman who made a defining contribution to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy at a critical moment in the nation’s history, stressing that the country owes him a depth of gratitude.
Tinubu said the former president has “remained the same guardian of our collective values since leaving office,” contrasting him with leaders who exploit their influence after public service instead of continuing to serve humanity.
He warned that democracy across West Africa and beyond faces growing threats from individuals who disregard institutions and treat elections as mere formalities, noting that Jonathan’s legacy shows that no ambition should supersede the stability of the state.
The president urged Nigerians to uphold democratic principles, accept electoral outcomes peacefully and recognise that democracy offers continual opportunities for renewed mandates.
Tinubu also commended the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation for its decade-long work, describing it as a model for public service beyond political office.
Jonathan, in his remarks, thanked dignitaries present and said the foundation has spent the past ten years promoting diplomacy, good governance, credible elections and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
