Banky W returns to music years after stepping away from industry

Nigerian-American singer Banky Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has announced his return to music, saying he felt a renewed sense of purpose after years of stepping away from the industry.
The musician-turned-pastor made the announcement on his Instagram page on Friday, sharing a preview of the music video for gospel musician Victor Thompson’s forthcoming single, “Super Power”, on which he featured. The song is scheduled for release on November 6, 2026.
Banky W also shared the story behind his return, revealing that he had no plans to record music again until a persistent creative urge prompted him to pray about what he described as unfinished business.
He said Thompson subsequently reached out to him for a collaboration, which he also interpreted as a nudge to return to music.
According to the EME Records boss, he had quietly put his music career behind him and moved on to other areas of his life, including politics. However, he said the pull towards music returned quietly and persistently through lyrics and melodies he could not ignore.
Although he admitted that he was unsure how to promote music in the current digital era, he expressed optimism about the collaboration, describing it as an act of obedience to God’s will.
The announcement comes after a period of personal and professional transition, during which he embraced additional responsibilities following his 2023 election bid. Banky W had earlier announced his pastoral and ambassadorial roles at Union Church, alongside his professorship at Union College.
Reaffirming his professional roles, he said, “Yes, I’m still a filmmaker, musician, and entrepreneur. But somehow, by the grace of God, I’m also a Pastor and a Professor”..
