Tottenham Spurs crash out as Liverpool cruise through with 3-1 win

Tottenham’s difficult start to the season continued as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by a heavily rotated Liverpool side.

Both managers made wholesale changes, with Liverpool making 10 and Spurs eight. After Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Lucas Bergvall, Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a fine finish from the edge of the box.

Spurs missed a chance to equalise when Mohammed Kudus fired over from close range, and Liverpool doubled their lead after the break through Cody Gakpo, who finished a move created by Mac Allister.

Tottenham pulled one back in the 69th minute when Conor Gallagher turned Mateus Fernandes’ corner into his own net. It was Spurs’ first goal against Premier League opposition this season, ending a four-match league drought.

They nearly equalised, but Mamardashvili denied Omar Marmoush and Savio fired wide. Dominik Szoboszlai sealed Liverpool’s place in the fourth round in stoppage time with a spectacular 25-yard strike.

Spurs have now lost three of six games in all competitions, with their only win coming against Charlton in the previous round.
