UNGA 2025: Shettima arrives in New York as Nigeria pushes multilateral agenda

Kunle Sanni –
Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where Nigeria is expected to push for reforms in global governance and promote its investment opportunities.
The week-long event, which runs from September 22 to 28, will see Shettima deliver Nigeria’s national statement, announce new commitments under the Paris Agreement, and participate in high-level debates and bilateral meetings.
Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who received the Vice President alongside other top officials, said the country will continue to champion effective multilateralism and enhanced partnerships. He disclosed that Nigeria is leading efforts on the proposed UN Global Convention on Taxation, describing it as a vital step toward reforming the global financial system.
“We also continue to promote Nigeria’s push to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in line with Africa’s common position under the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration,” Tuggar said.
The minister added that peacekeeping, global security, and regional conflicts—particularly in Gaza, Sudan, and Eastern Congo—remain high on Nigeria’s agenda at UNGA 80. Shettima is also scheduled to attend an African Union Peace and Security Council meeting and hold talks with the Prime Minister of Sudan.
Nigeria’s delegation to New York includes several ministers and state governors, with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani stressing that the country’s active participation would further reposition it as a leading investment destination.
“Our priority areas include solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education. We believe UNGA 80 will strengthen Nigeria’s global standing as one of Africa’s foremost economies,” he said.
Similarly, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Olajumoke Oduwole announced that Nigeria will host a Nigeria Investment Day on Monday, with a focus on solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology. “The goal is to showcase Nigeria’s reforms and highlight priority sectors under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” she explained.
