Uzodimma approves N300m support package for Imo returnees, law students
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved the release of N300 million to support Imo indigenes who recently returned from South Africa and students of the Nigerian Law School from the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, disclosed this in a statement issued in Owerri, describing the intervention as part of the governor’s commitment to the welfare of Imo citizens.
According to the statement, 250 returnees from South Africa will receive N1 million each to aid their resettlement and reintegration into society, while 100 Imo students currently enrolled at the Nigerian Law School will receive N500,000 each to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
Emelumba explained that the governor approved the support for the law students following appeals for assistance in coping with increasing expenses associated with their studies and daily living.
“The law students made a passionate appeal to His Excellency to support them in cushioning the effects of global inflation and the rising cost of living. As a caring father, he responded promptly. The returnees also needed assistance to settle down and reintegrate into society with minimal discomfort, which informed the governor’s approval of a reintegration fund for them,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the intervention aligns with the Shared Prosperity agenda of the Uzodimma administration, which seeks to improve the welfare of citizens alongside ongoing infrastructure and development projects across the state.
He added that the governor recognised the challenges faced by the returnees and considered it necessary to provide a safety net to help them rebuild their lives after their return from South Africa.
Emelumba also recalled that Uzodimma had consistently supported Imo law students through scholarships and other forms of assistance, stressing that the latest intervention was a continuation of the administration’s investment in education and human capital development.
