Rivers Assembly says impeachment process against Fubara, Odu on course

The Rivers State House of Assembly has said the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, is progressing in line with constitutional provisions.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Dr Enemi Alabo George, said the process, which began on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is being conducted in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to the statement, two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and deputy governor have been forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, and the lawmakers are awaiting their formal responses.

The Assembly said it remains constitutionally empowered to act in the interest of the people of Rivers State and to check any alleged infractions by the governor, deputy governor or other officials of the state government.

The House also dismissed reports suggesting that the impeachment process had been halted or discontinued, describing such claims as misleading and intended to cause disaffection between the legislature and the public.

Hon. George added that the Assembly would not be distracted by what he termed false narratives, blackmail or threats, stressing that lawmakers remain committed to carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support, and thanked stakeholders and leaders at various levels for their encouragement, while reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
