UPDATED: Ebola: NCDC reports one confirmed case in FCT, suspected case in Rivers

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed one case of Ebola virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while a suspected case reported in Rivers State has tested negative.

The agency disclosed this in its Ebola Disease Situation Report dated October 24, 2026, which listed two suspected cases, one confirmed infection and 53 contacts linked to the confirmed case.

According to the report, the confirmed case involves a 42-year-old woman who returned to Nigeria from Uganda through Addis Ababa on October 3.

She developed symptoms on October 7 and visited a private health facility on October 10 before presenting at another private facility on October 11, where she was admitted.

The NCDC said it was notified of the case on October 19, leading to an investigation and sample collection. The agency’s National Reference Laboratory confirmed the infection on October 20.

Rivers suspected case tests negative

The NCDC said Rivers State reported a new suspected case on October 23, but laboratory results returned negative for Ebola. The results had been communicated to the state.

The development brings the number of confirmed cases recorded in the report to one, with the FCT listed as the only state or territory with a confirmed infection.

According to the situation report, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare is providing high-level coordination, while response activities are being implemented across different areas, including surveillance, laboratory testing, case management, infection prevention and public communication.

Editor’s note: This report has been updated to reflect the NCDC’s situation report dated October 24, 2026, which confirmed one Ebola case in the FCT and clarified that the suspected case in Rivers State tested negative. The earlier version has been amended to reflect these verified details.
