A reminiscence of the beginning: Celebrating 20 Years of the Araism Movement — by Abiola Akande
Twenty years ago, on Saturday, July 22, 2006, a remarkable chapter in the history of contemporary Nigerian art was written at the Harmattan Workshop Gallery, 10, Elsie Femi Pearse Street, Off Adeola Odeku, Victoria Island, Lagos.
That day at that venue, the Araism Movement was launched through its maiden exhibition – a bold artistic vision conceptualized by Dr. Mufu Onifade, inventor of the Araism painting technique and founder of the Araism Movement. Standing with him were the pioneering disciples: Olaniyi Omojuwa, Tope Oguntuase, Dotun Popoola, Mautin Akande (Oldskool), and Jonathan Ikpoza, whose works celebrated African identity, originality, and creative excellence.
From that historic beginning, Araism has evolved into a respected artistic genre, inspiring generations of artists through innovation, mentorship, and an enduring commitment to authentic artistic expression.
As we commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Araism Movement today, we fondly remember that unforgettable exhibition—the birth of a movement, the foundation of a legacy, and the beginning of a vision that continues to thrive.
