Afenifere renews call to back state police, boost local security

The Ondo State chapter of the Afenifere group has urged traditional rulers across the South-West to revive local security structures and defence mechanisms to protect their communities from criminal elements.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Chief Korede Duyile, and Secretary, Dr Bakkita Bello, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group said monarchs should take proactive steps to prevent the infiltration of bandits and other violent groups into their domains.

The group also called on residents of Ondo State and the wider South-West region to remain vigilant and be prepared to lawfully organise themselves for self-defence against security threats.

Afenifere further expressed concern over the abduction of 42 pupils and seven teachers from Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, describing the incident as tragic and disturbing.

The organisation equally condemned the continued captivity of the victims, saying the abductions had subjected them and their families to severe physical and psychological trauma.

While sympathising with the affected families and the Oyo State Government, Afenifere commended efforts by security agencies and relevant authorities working towards the safe rescue of the victims.

The group renewed its call for the establishment of state police, regional governance structures and constitutional roles for traditional rulers, arguing that such measures would strengthen grassroots security.

It also urged governments at all levels to provide adequate resources for intelligence gathering and surveillance, while calling for speedy prosecution of terrorists, kidnappers and other violent offenders across the country.
