Alia signs Benue Electricity Law to enhance power supply, economic growth
The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has signed into law the Benue State Electricity Law, 2026, in a move aimed at improving electricity supply and accelerating economic development across the state.
The governor assented to the legislation on Monday during a ceremony held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi.
According to the state government, the new law provides a legal framework for increased electricity generation, transmission and distribution within Benue, with the objective of ensuring a more reliable and stable power supply for homes, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities.
The government said improved access to electricity would attract investors, encourage industrial growth and create employment opportunities for residents, particularly young people.
It added that businesses would benefit from reduced dependence on generators and other alternative power sources, leading to lower operating costs, increased profitability and improved competitiveness of locally produced goods.
The law also contains provisions aimed at strengthening consumer protection through fair billing practices, improved service delivery, prompt resolution of complaints and greater accountability by electricity providers.
In addition, the state government noted that the legislation would support rural electrification efforts, extending access to electricity to underserved communities and enhancing healthcare delivery, education, agricultural processing, security and living standards.
The government expressed confidence that the law would stimulate industrialisation, create jobs, protect consumers and improve the overall quality of life of residents, positioning Benue State for sustainable economic growth.
