Army exhumes remains of murdered Imo community leader, vows justice

Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation UDO KA have exhumed the remains of a murdered community leader, Chief Ibe Anyadu, in Imo State, while the Nigerian Army has vowed to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The operation was carried out under the ongoing Operation EASTERN SANITY II following intelligence-led operations that recently led to the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the recovery of stolen military weapons.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, one of the arrested suspects confessed to participating in the murder of Chief Anyadu and led troops to the burial site.

The statement disclosed that the suspects guided soldiers on Sunday to a shallow grave located in Umudike Forest, identified as one of the gang’s camps, where the remains of the late community leader were successfully exhumed.

The exhumation was witnessed by members of the deceased’s family, vigilante personnel from Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, and representatives of the Aggah and Umudike communities. The family provided a coffin and ambulance to ensure a dignified burial in line with local customs.

Commander of Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Ayobami Fadairo, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that the suspects would face prosecution in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Fadairo said, assuring the family and the people of Aggah Community that justice would be served.

The Army said Operation UDO KA remains committed to dismantling criminal networks across the South-East, bringing perpetrators of violent crimes to justice and encouraging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.
