Baba-Ahmed dumps Labour Party, joins PRP amid LP crisis

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has announced his decision to leave the party and join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), citing unresolved internal crises and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed said his resignation from the Labour Party would take effect at midnight on Wednesday.

According to him, persistent disagreements and actions by certain individuals within the party influenced his decision to exit. He said the Labour Party no longer reflects the values it once stood for.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow [Wednesday]. There is more to it,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He added, “I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old.”

Baba-Ahmed’s departure comes amid growing tensions within the Labour Party, which has recently been engulfed in leadership disputes and factional struggles over control of the party.

The crisis deepened on Tuesday after the party elected Nenadi Usman as its substantive national chairperson, a development that has further highlighted divisions among members.
