Boundary row: Ifo council boss tackles Lagos counterpart over boundary signpost

By Damilola Akinwale

The Chairman of Ifo Local Government in Ogun State, Kusimo Idris Olalekan, has disputed Lagos State’s territorial claims along the Yakoyo–Ojodu Road following the recent erection of a “Welcome to Lagos State” signpost in the area.

Olalekan warned that the signpost risks causing widespread public confusion regarding the interstate boundary, maintaining that the affected Yakoyo axis within the Isheri-Ojodu Ward falls strictly under Ogun State’s jurisdiction.

The development has reignited longstanding tensions over the boundary limits between both states, coming shortly after the Ogun State Government completed major road construction projects along the corridor under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.

According to the council executive, the territorial identity of communities along the Yakoyo–Ojodu corridor has been a persistent point of friction, with Ifo officials accusing Lagos of repeated encroachments into Ogun territory.

Council representatives further cautioned that placing boundary markers in contested zones without prior consensus could escalate local tensions and disrupt daily life for surrounding communities.

To resolve the impasse, the council called for an urgent review of official boundary records, approved survey coordinates, and archived government documents to permanently establish the legal jurisdictions of both states.

Olalekan urged the Lagos State Government to caution the chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area against unilateral actions, reiterating his administration’s resolve to safeguard the territorial integrity of Ogun State and its residents.

Representatives for the Lagos State Government and Ojodu Local Council Development Area have not yet issued a formal response.
