Court arraigns Ondo man over alleged assault on police officer

A 24-year-old man, Israel Njoku, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State for allegedly assaulting a police officer while the officer was performing his official duties.

Njoku is facing four charges bordering on conspiracy, obstruction of police personnel, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and assault. The charges were filed against him alongside other suspects who are still at large.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on September 17, 2026, along the Ilesha-Owo Expressway, opposite Pamper, Akure, within the jurisdiction of the court.

Police prosecutor Augustine Omhenimhen told the court that Njoku and his alleged accomplices obstructed police officers who were carrying out their lawful duties before allegedly attacking them.

The prosecutor further alleged that Njoku assaulted the Divisional Crime Officer II, ASP Olorunfemi Paul, by beating him and dragging him on the ground, causing injuries to his face.

The alleged offences were said to contravene Sections 516, 75, 249(b) and 356(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Volume I, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

Njoku pleaded for bail through his counsel, Daniel Onu, who urged the court to release him on liberal terms. However, the prosecutor opposed the application and urged the court to remand the defendant, alleging that the police officer sustained an injury around his eye.

Magistrate Taiwo Lebi adjourned ruling on the bail application until September 24, 2026, and directed the prosecution to prepare its witnesses for the continuation of the case.
