Dangote engages Engineers India for $16bn Kenya refinery project
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has engaged Engineers India Ltd. to oversee the construction of a major refinery and petrochemical complex planned for Kenya.
Engineers India, which is majority-owned by the Indian government, disclosed in a filing with the Mumbai Stock Exchange that it had secured a $450 million contract from Dangote for engineering and construction management services on the project.
The planned facility will be located in Lamu, on Kenya’s coast, and is expected to have a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The project, valued at about $16 billion, will also include a petrochemical plant.
The Indian engineering company previously worked on Dangote’s 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Lagos, which is currently Africa’s largest oil refinery.
Dangote is expected to begin construction of the Kenyan project this month as part of plans to expand his energy business beyond Nigeria.
The Lamu refinery is expected to strengthen Kenya’s domestic refining capacity while supporting the country’s ambition to develop a major energy and industrial hub along its coast.
