Davido calls for violence-free governorship election in Osun

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on politicians, their supporters and residents of Osun State to shun violence and ensure the peaceful conduct of the August 15 governorship election, insisting that no political ambition is worth the loss of any life.

Addressing a press conference as Chairman of the Imole Youth Campaign Mobilisation Team, Davido urged eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic responsibility without fear, saying their votes must count and their choices should be respected.

“I understand the tension and emotions surrounding this election, but I urge everyone to remain calm. No political ambition, disagreement or election is worth the life of an Osun son or daughter. Let us reject violence, intimidation, provocation and destruction. Let us show the world that Osun people are peaceful, courageous and determined to build a better future for the state,” he said.

Davido also appealed to the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, who chairs the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council for Osun, over rumours of possible interference in the election.

“I have heard rumours suggesting that there are moves to interfere in the Osun election or use the state as a political battleground to prove a point. I do not present these claims as facts, but I appeal to you to use your influence to promote peace and allow the people of Osun to choose their candidate freely,” he said.

The singer noted that his wife, Chioma, is from Imo State, saying the family connection made his appeal to Uzodinma more sincere.

He urged the governor to allow democracy to take its course and let the people of Osun decide who governs them.

Davido also appealed to all governorship candidates, their supporters and political parties to place the interest of the state above personal ambition and accept the outcome of the election if it reflects the will of the electorate.
