FG introduces learner ID system for WAEC, NECO candidates

The federal government has launched a nationwide Learner Identification Number (LIN) system aimed at strengthening academic tracking and improving education data management across the country.

In a statement issued on Friday by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, ministry of education, the initiative is part of efforts to digitise education records and improve planning in the sector.

The statement also described the rollout as a key milestone in ongoing reforms to modernise the education sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a turning point for the sector.

He said: “This initiative marks a turning point in our education system. By assigning every learner a unique number, we are building a structure that supports each child’s journey from classroom to career, while ensuring that no one is left behind.”

He further explained that the reform is part of broader efforts to modernise education delivery through technology and data-driven decision-making.

According to the minister, the LIN assigns every learner a unique and permanent digital identity that will follow students throughout their academic journey, even when they change schools or relocate.

The statement noted that the system is designed to ensure continuity of records and improve accountability in education data management.

In the first phase, more than 1.9 million candidates registered for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council have already been issued LINs.
