FG strengthens teacher education with ICT support for colleges of education
The federal government has intensified efforts to strengthen teacher education and improve access to inclusive and quality learning through the distribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to selected Colleges of Education across Nigeria.
The Federal Ministry of Education disclosed that the handover ceremony for the ICT tools will take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja under the Project for Capacity-Building of Teachers to Promote Continuous and Inclusive Access to Safe and Quality Education for Girls in West Africa.
The project is funded by the Government of Japan through the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA).
According to the Ministry, the initiative seeks to tackle key educational challenges in Nigeria and the West African region, including low educational attainment, high numbers of out-of-school children, learning poverty, gender inequality, insecurity, and the shortage of qualified teachers.
The intervention focuses on strengthening teacher-training institutions, promoting gender-responsive and conflict-sensitive teaching methods, and deploying digital solutions to improve teacher training and management systems.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the African Union International Centre for the Education of Girls and Women in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) and the African Union Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI) Team in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Ministry stated that the ICT support would improve technology integration in teaching and learning, increase the number of qualified teachers, enhance learning outcomes, and support retention of female students in schools.
Items approved for distribution include 65 laptop computers, 71 tablets, four desktop computers, five interactive smart boards, 19 all-in-one desktop computers, 14 projectors, 15 printers, and 15 backup hard drives.
Beneficiary institutions include Federal College of Education, Kontagora; Federal College of Education, Zaria; Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe; Federal College of Education, Yola; and College of Education, Zuba, among others.
