Fire scare at Lagos airport traced to suppression system — FAAN
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, saying the smoke that caused concern on Sunday was triggered by the terminal’s fire suppression system.
The clarification followed earlier reports of a fire incident at the terminal, which prompted an emergency response by the authority’s Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service.
In a statement signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority said preliminary investigations showed there was no fire at the facility.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the statement read.
FAAN said normal operations had resumed at the terminal while investigations continue to determine what triggered the suppression system.
The authority thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the incident.
