Ahead of his coronation, the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has issued a stern warning to illegal gold miners operating in Ilesa and surrounding communities.
Speaking during the unveiling of a documentary on mining in Ijesaland, themed “Value-Creating Best Mining Practice and World-Class Environmental Stewardship,” the monarch decried the environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities.
He emphasized that the Ijesa people are peace-loving but not afraid to defend their land. “We are not cowards. We give peace a chance, but during my reign, we will resist invaders threatening our gold-rich areas,” Oba Haastrup said.
The royal father expressed deep concern over the pollution and security risks linked to unregulated mining, saying the situation demands urgent attention.
He also appealed to potential investors, noting that gold mining requires substantial investment, which should begin locally before attracting international backing.
“There are extensive studies that must be done, often requiring expertise from countries like Canada, South Africa, and Australia. It’s expensive, but we must begin with local consultants,” he added.
Oba Haastrup highlighted the high quality of gold in Ijesaland, stating that it is “precisely 24 karat,” and called for strategic investment to harness the region’s mineral wealth responsibly.
He assured investors of a peaceful and welcoming environment, promising that his reign will prioritize sustainable development and community protection.
