Group accuses ADC of politicising El-Rufai, Malami trials
A civil society group, The Democratic Front (TDF), has criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its comments on the ongoing trials of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
The group described as reckless a recent statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, which accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of selective justice in the prosecution of the two political figures.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group alleged that the opposition party was attempting to divert public attention from its recent electoral setback.
“The most disheartening fact is that ADC’s allegation of selective justice against their members was devoid of specific evidence that could justify their claims,” the group stated.
TDF argued that the allegations were premature, noting that both El-Rufai and Malami were being accorded their constitutional rights and given the opportunity to defend themselves in court.
The group also said the charges against the two former officials were already in the public domain and that the judicial proceedings were being conducted openly in line with due process.
According to the organisation, claims of political persecution were unfounded, stressing that the administration had not interfered with the judicial process.
TDF therefore urged the ADC to desist from what it described as attempts to create narratives of political persecution and instead focus on rebuilding its image following its performance in the recent Federal Capital Territory local council elections.
