JUST IN: Labour leader Adeleke dies during international conference in Geneva
The Nigerian labour movement has been thrown into mourning following the death of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), during an official assignment in Geneva, Switzerland.
Adeleke, who was part of Nigeria’s delegation to the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), died on Tuesday after a brief illness.
According to reports, he became ill while attending the conference and was taken for medical treatment, where he later passed away.
Confirming the development, an official of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) described Adeleke as a dedicated trade unionist committed to advancing workers’ welfare and promoting decent work.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Nigeria Labour Congress and the entire trade union movement in Nigeria, especially the 2026 Workers’ Delegates to the International Labour Conference, announce the passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who died today in Geneva after a brief illness while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference,” the official said.
A member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Adeleke served as Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council, where he was actively involved in labour advocacy and workers’ welfare initiatives.
The NLC said its leadership had visited the hospital where his body is being kept and had begun arrangements for the repatriation of his remains to Nigeria.
The congress extended condolences to his family, colleagues and members of the labour movement, describing his passing as a significant loss and urging workers to continue drawing inspiration from his commitment to workers’ rights and social justice.
