Kano senator Rufai Hanga resigns from NDC

Senator Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ending the party’s representation in the Senate from northern Nigeria.

Hanga, the NDC’s only senator from the North and the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the party chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The lawmaker said his resignation takes immediate effect, describing the decision as the outcome of “careful reflection and personal deliberation.”

“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga wrote.

He explained that he was leaving the party to pursue “other personal commitments and career paths.”

The senator expressed appreciation to the ward executive committee and members of the party for their support during his time in the NDC.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party,” he said.

“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences gained during our political activities together.”
