Nigerian ambassador presents credentials to Portugal’s president
Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Portugal, Erelu Angela Adebayo, has formally presented her Letters of Credence to Portuguese President António José Seguro, officially commencing her diplomatic assignment in the European country.
The ceremony took place on Monday at the Belém Palace in Lisbon, marking the formal start of Adebayo’s tenure as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Portuguese Republic.
During a meeting with President Seguro, the ambassador conveyed the goodwill of President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Portugal.
She identified key areas for deeper cooperation to include trade and investment, maritime security, energy, agriculture, education, tourism, cultural exchanges and multilateral engagement.
Adebayo also emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to economic diplomacy and closer collaboration with Portugal on regional and global issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate action and the Africa-European Union partnership.
In his remarks, President Seguro welcomed the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to expanding ties with Nigeria.
He described Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa and underscored its importance in promoting stronger cooperation between Africa and Europe.
The ambassador pledged to work closely with the Portuguese government, the diplomatic corps, the private sector and the Nigerian community in Portugal to deepen the longstanding relationship between both countries and promote mutually beneficial partnerships.
