Ondo students give two-week ultimatum over stalled ₦760m road project

The National Association of Idanre Students has issued a two-week ultimatum to HK Flamingo Construction Company and relevant government authorities to resume work on the ₦760 million Owena–Alade Idanre Road project, following a peaceful protest by residents of the community.
The protest attracted students, youths, transporters, farmers, traders and other residents of Idanre Kingdom, who demanded immediate action on the road project, describing its prolonged delay as unacceptable.
According to the association, the Owena–Alade Idanre Road serves as the major gateway into Idanre Kingdom and is critical to transportation, agriculture, commerce, education and healthcare. It lamented that the road’s poor condition had increased transportation costs, damaged vehicles and exposed commuters to avoidable risks.
The President of NAIS, Akinmolayan Ayomide, said the protest was organised to seek accountability and transparency over the abandoned project rather than to disrupt public peace.
He said, “Our protest is not intended to cause disorder but to peacefully demand transparency, accountability and immediate action on the Owena–Alade Idanre Road project. The people of Idanre deserve clear information on the status of the contract and the progress made so far.”
The association warned that residents could no longer remain silent over the prolonged delay, insisting that the contractor and relevant authorities must return to the site within two weeks and provide an update on the project’s implementation and completion plans.
“We have exercised patience for too long. We are giving the contractor and the appropriate authorities a two-week ultimatum to resume construction work and demonstrate commitment to completing this vital project,” the association stated.
NAIS also appealed to traditional rulers, political office holders, community leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at ensuring the completion of the road, while commending security agencies, the media and residents for maintaining peace throughout the demonstration.
