Osun civil society groups accuse FG of undermining democracy

A coalition of civil society organisations under the Network of Civil Society Groups in Osun State has accused the Federal Government of systematically undermining democracy and opposition parties in Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Osogbo on Thursday, the coalition, led by Comrade Yaya Ademola, said recent moves by the Federal Government, including alleged manipulation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), threaten the credibility of elections and the rule of law.

Ademola specifically highlighted the removal of the lawful leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of what it described as a deliberate effort to weaken one of the few viable opposition parties in the country.

He alleged that these actions are aimed at ensuring the President faces no serious challenge in forthcoming elections.

The group also claimed that the situation was connected to preparations for the August 15, 2026, governorship election in the state, which it described as crucial ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the group, the August 15 election extends beyond the state alone; it is historically pivotal to shaping national electoral outcomes. Hence, the perceived strength of the ADC has made it a target for exclusion from the ballot, which it described as part of a broader plan to limit voters’ choices.

Ademola added, “We want to expressly state that every attempt to manipulate the Osun gubernatorial election against the will of the people will be resisted and will woefully fail.

“The people will never accept a candidate imposed through a rigged election. The people will be vigilant and do everything legitimately possible to achieve a free, fair and credible election and make the most favoured candidate win.”
