PDP bids farewell to Governor Fintiri over defection to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as disappointing but within his legal rights.

In a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on Friday, the party said it was aware of the governor’s official announcement of his defection via a broadcast in Adamawa State.

The PDP noted that the move had long been speculated, despite several rebuttals from Governor Fintiri, including denials issued after a recent presidential visit to the state. According to the party, the governor’s broadcast has now confirmed what was previously regarded as rumour, as he aligned with the ruling party in what he described as the “developmental interest” of Adamawa State.

While acknowledging that the defection falls within Fintiri’s constitutional rights, the PDP criticised the decision as being contrary to political principles and morality. The party described the move as a challenge to multi-party democracy and democratic consolidation.

The statement further accused the governor of abandoning a platform that supported him through multiple election cycles at the “sight of slight discomfort,” characterising the action as unprincipled.

Bidding him farewell, the PDP stated that history and posterity would serve as impartial judges of human conduct, noting that the actions and inactions of political actors are always recorded.

The party urged its members in Adamawa State to accept the development with grace and remain steadfast, expressing confidence that its “rebirth movement” remains on course and will reposition the party for future electoral victories.
