PDP hierachy: Assemblage of lawbreakers, by Kola Amzat

These past few weeks, there have been a series of conflicting court judgments on the proposed PDP convention scheduled for Ibadan metropolis between November 15 and 16, 2025. 

Nigerians recall that Justice James Omotosho of Federal High Court, Abuja in his verdict ruled against the convention, as well as mandated INEC officials to stay away from the precinct of the venue.

The implication of the above remains: any resolution emanating from the convention, including the proposed composition of National Working Committee (NWC) members is deemed nullity.

Just few days after Justice Omotosho’s verdict, one Justice Akintola of Ibadan High Court, ruled in a similar case brought to his court by some disgruntled PDP chieftains that the convention should proceed as originally scheduled, and also pronounced that INEC officials should attend to supervise.

Thereafter, there have been other judgments in other courts obtained by the top PDP party chieftains, one of which was that of Alhaji Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa state, technically halting the go-ahead of the convention on the issue bothering on his been denied of his rights by the party, to bid for the office of the party chairmanship at the convention.

Such have been the spectacle of lawlessness and impunity that PDP top hierarchy have treated Nigeria judiciary and Nigerian people to, in past few weeks, brazenly submitting the party as the pawn in the hand of recklessness and disobedience.

Suddenly, PDP hierarchy has constituted the party and themselves as instruments in the hand of political anarchy, chaos and disorderliness.

Simply put: it does appear the party has no modicum of respect for the rule of law.

Report in the public domain indicates that, party delegates from all across the states are already thronging the ancient city of Ibadan for the convention already declared nullity by the court.

It’s curious and unfathomable that while the top hierarchy of the party are hell-bent in holding the convention, they pay no attention to the continual depletion in the rank and file of the party.

Within the space of five or six months, six key governors of the party, alongside their state cabinet members, as well as all party executives in wards and local government councils have all defected to the ruling party-APC.

In the weeks ahead, Taraba and Plateau state governors and all their teams of cabinet members, local government council and ward leaders are equally defecting to APC, leaving only three or four governors in the fold of the party.

At the national assembly, very significant numbers of senators, as well as House of Representatives members of their party-PDP have jumped ship to the ruling party during the plenaries, a development that has miraculously made the ruling party attain 2/3 majority, both in the lower and upper chambers. 

Suffice to submit that, what remains of PDP is CARCASS, a very unfortunate development for a party that once held sway at the national level for 16 solid years, with the then party hierarchy even boasting that they would be at the corridor of power for another 60 years.  What a misfortune in its height!

For the PDP party hierarchy, it’s an auspicious time to pick the pieces of the party, and they must do this by starting respecting the law of the land.

They must subject themselves and the party to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, as well as the tenets, ethos, and principles of democratic practices.

The proposed convention in Ibadan scheduled to commence in 24 hours’ time has been declared a NULLITY by the court of competent jurisdiction.

The convention must therefore be HALTED FORTHWITH, for the purpose of paving way for TRUCE amongst the factional groups and other warring party members. This is the way to go!

Do Nigerians even need to appeal to them to halt the holding of the convention, which resolutions coming therefrom have been declared null and void?

Why must they commit resources accrued to the funding states’ from FAAC to a project that has been ab-initio declared NULLITY, simply because few leaders of the party are hell-bent in flexing their muscle?

It’s also important that security team-DSS, Police Force, and even members of Armed Forces of Nigeria must arise to stop the convention by cordoning the venue of the convention in Ibadan, and proceed to make necessary arrests.
