Rivers APC gubernatorial candidate Chinda resigns as House minority leader
Kingsley Chinda, the lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State, has resigned as the minority leader of the House of Representatives.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced Chinda’s resignation during plenary on Tuesday, reading a letter dated April 23, 2026, in which the lawmaker formally stepped down from the position.
In the letter, Chinda expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the minority caucus and contribute to the legislative work of the House.
“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in this capacity, representing the collective interest of the minority caucus and contributing to the legislative work of the House,” he wrote.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to work under your leadership and alongside distinguished colleagues in advancing democratic governance and national development.”
Chinda said he remains committed to his responsibilities as a member of the House and would continue to support the legislature in every way possible.
The lawmaker did not state whether he had also resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amid growing speculation over his political affiliation.
His resignation comes weeks after he emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections. Chinda, an ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, secured the party’s ticket on May 21.
