Royal title document raises questions over Alli’s governorship ambition

Fresh attention has been drawn to the political future of Oyo State APC governorship aspirant, Sharafadeen Alli, following the emergence of an official document showing that he was formally conferred with a royal title under the Chiefs Law of Oyo State.

The document, titled “Conferment of Obaship on Ekaarun Balogun,” indicates that Governor Seyi Makinde, acting pursuant to Section 28(1), Cap. 28 Vol. 1 of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State 2000, approved the conferment of the title of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli.

The development has triggered renewed debate over the implications of his reported governorship aspiration ahead of the 2027 election, particularly in relation to the expectations placed on traditional rulers under Nigerian law and custom.

Observers note that traditional rulers are generally required to maintain political neutrality and refrain from partisan political activities, raising questions about whether Alli may eventually have to choose between elective office and his royal status.

Legal and traditional affairs commentators argue that pursuing a governorship bid could necessitate relinquishing the traditional title, depending on applicable laws and the requirements governing traditional institutions in the state.

Beyond the royal title itself, analysts say any decision to exit the traditional institution could have consequences for Alli’s standing within the Olubadan succession structure, which operates under a long-established hierarchy and progression system.

Stakeholders familiar with the Ibadan traditional system note that vacating a position within the succession line could permanently affect progression through that route, with implications extending beyond the individual office holder to the historical legacy attached to the position.

While Alli has previously downplayed concerns over the issue, he has yet to publicly address the specific implications of the newly surfaced document. Its emergence has nevertheless intensified discussions about the balance between traditional responsibilities and political ambition as preparations for the 2027 governorship contest gather momentum in Oyo State.
